What is Dermapen skin needling?
The process of Dermapen skin needling involves piercing the skin with micro, sterile needles. This creates a controlled skin injury that starts an inflammatory response, encouraging your skin to create new cells, elastin and collagen. Dermal needling is a form of collagen induction therapy.
Skin needling can be used for a wide range of skin concerns, including acne, pigmentation, aging, and scars. At Chantal Louise Skin, we use the Dermapen 4 to complete our skin needling treatments.
The Dermapen is a fantastic device, as it allows skin therapists to change the depth of the needles for different areas on a client’s face. This allows for a more customised and effective treatment.
Dermapen skin needling for acne
Depending on the type of acne you're experiencing, skin needling could be a beneficial skin treatment, those that have tiny bumps underneath the skin - also known as congestion - often respond well to skin needling. The bumps are pierced by the needles, which helps bring oxygen in to help kill bacteria. Cystic, nodules, and whiteheads tend not to respond well to dermal needling, and we always suggest trying other treatments first. It can also be used to reduce the appearance of acne scarring.
Dermapen skin needling for scarring
As dermal needling helps encourage new cell growth, it's great for reducing the look of acne scarring and stretch marks. By boosting collagen and elastin, the skin appears more plump, reducing the appearance of scars. We typically recommend a minimum of six skin needling treatments, however, this number will change depending on the depth of the scarring. Dermal needling is a great treatment option for acne scars, stretch marks and more.
Dermapen skin needling for aging
Skin needling works well on aging skin, as it drives collagen and elastin production. The Dermapen stimulates fibroblast cells - found in your skin's inner layer. These cells secrete collagen proteins and help build the collagen and elastin in your skin, while also being responsible for your skin's injury recovery. You'll notice Dermapen skin needling helps soften fine lines and wrinkles.
Dermapen skin needling for pigmentation
The Dermapen is fantastic for pigmentation. Skin needling gradually breaks up skin pigmentation, allowing new cells to replace damaged and pigmented cells. The cause of the pigmentation also plays a part in how the treatment responds.
What preparation is needed for skin needling?
At Chantal Louise Skin, we complete a thorough skin consultation before undergoing skin needling treatment. This helps us to learn more about your skin and the goals you’re aiming to achieve.
Before starting dermal needling, we prefer our clients to undergo at least two to four weeks of advanced Cosmedical-grade skincare. This encourages cell turnover and repair before your needling session.
It’s essential to take vitamins A, B, and C to prepare your skin ahead of the needling. We also recommend using a high-quality SPF to protect your skin from UV damage.
What does it feel like?
With all the talk of needles and skin injury, you may be feeling a little apprehensive about the thought of having a Dermapen placed on your face. However, we tend to tell clients that it feels like a slightly more intense microdermabrasion. You’ll likely be able to slightly feel the Dermapen as it moves across your skin, particularly over bony areas, but it’s over quickly.
Our skin needling treatments only take five to ten minutes, so it's completely manageable (and won't take up too much of your day).
How many Dermapen skin needling sessions are needed?
The number of dermal needling sessions you’ll need to experience your desired results will depend on a number of factors. This includes the condition being treated, the depth or intensity of the condition, and your skin type.
When you undergo your initial skin consultation with us, we'll be able to make an assessment and put together a bespoke treatment plan.
How will my skin look after?
Initially after treatment, your skin will tend to look a little red, almost as if you’ve spent too much time in the sun and have caught a sunburn. This redness will generally disappear that same night, or the following morning. A few days after you’ve undergone dermal needling, you might notice your skin experiences slight flaking, dryness, roughness, or breakouts.
You should begin to see and feel a difference in your skin seven to 10 days after your Dermapen needling treatment.

Dermapen needling can feel slightly unpleasant for some. Chances are you’ll feel discomfort while the treatment is underway, however, the needling only occurs for 5-10 minutes. During your session, you can always let us know if you’re experiencing pain and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
